Project Spotlight - UTC Birdbath

This oversized birdbath was commissioned by Westfield University Town Center in La Jolla, California.

This is the second large-scale sculpture by Pat Downing commissioned by Westfield UTC as part of the mall’s redesign.

You will find it in “The Garden” presented in partnership with the San Diego Botanic Garden.

The piece is made from a single 4-foot by 4-foot piece of copper that was custom ordered specifically for this piece. The copper was hand textured and then the bowl was hand “sunk” in the center. The piece is so large that Pat needed to use large pipe over the forks of a forklift to make the curves of the corners.

The patina was created using layers of colors from oranges and reds to purples and blues. The color seems to change throughout day depending on the sunlight.
